چکیده

The effect of the microbial growth on hydraulic properties of porous media is a topic studied in the framework of many applications, e.g. oil recovery, wastewater treatment, bioremediation, etc. (see [1]). Studies on flow through porous media in presence of biomass growth are presented in the papers by Rockhold et al. [2–4]. As stated there, additional work is needed for modelling unsaturated condition. The objective of this study is thus to analyze the flow through a contaminated unsaturated porous medium in presence of biomass growth processes which induce changes in the hydraulic properties of the medium itself. In this paper we focus only on anaerobic processes, namely the model we develop does not account for the O2 consumption and diffusion.

Applications of hydraulic properties models on microscopic flow in unsaturated porous media

Several existing equations for solving the non-linear soil-hydraulic properties are introduced and validated to field and laboratory measured data. Models for non-linear hydraulic properties of unsaturated porous media arise from statistical and mathematical fit through the measured data and they can be expressed in forms of unsaturated permeability versus either pressure head or volumetric moi...

Biofilm growth in porous media: experiments, computational modeling at the porescale, and upscaling

Biofilm growth changes many physical properties of porous media such as porosity, permeability and mass transport parameters. The growth depends on various environmental conditions, and in particular, on flow rates. Modeling the evolution of such properties is difficult both at the porescale where the phase morphology can be distinguished, as well as during upscaling to the corescale effective ...

An Efficient Method for Simulating Steady Unsaturated Flow in Random Porous Media: Using an Analytical Perturbation Solution as Initial Guess to a Numerical Model

Numerical simulation of flow through multidimensional heterogeneous soils under unsaturated conditions is a computationally intensive task. The governing unsaturated flow equation is nonlinear. The degree of nonlinearity depends on the unsaturated hydraulic properties of the soil and the degree of heterogeneity. In this paper, we present a highly efficient method to simulate unsaturated steady ...

Interaction between water flow and spatial distribution of microbial growth in a two-dimensional flow field in saturated porous media.

Bacterial growth and its interaction with water flow was investigated in a two-dimensional flow field in a saturated porous medium. A flow cell (56 x 44 x 1 cm) was filled with glass beads and operated under a continuous flow of a mineral medium containing nitrate as electron acceptor. A glucose solution was injected through an injection port, simulating a point source contamination. Visible li...

Flow in unsaturated random porous media, nonlinear numerical analysis and comparison to analytical stochastic models

This work presents a rigorous numerical validation of analytical stochastic models of steady state unsaturated flow in heterogeneous porous media. It also provides a crucial link between stochastic theory based on simplifying assumptions and empirical field and simulation evidence of variably saturated flow in actual or realistic hypothetical heterogeneous porous media. Statistical properties o...
